Chapter 10

“He tried to run us down,” Josephine gasped. “We were in a zebra crossing. He was supposed to stop.”

“Maybe he didn’t see us,” Janet said as she tried to think.

“He saw you,” Christopher whispered in her ear.

She inhaled sharply and then straightened and took a step away from the man who still had an arm around her. He released her and Josephine and then smiled at them both.

“I hope you’re both okay,” he said.

“If we are, it’s only thanks to you,” Janet said. “Thank you.”

He nodded. “I’m just glad I noticed that the man didn’t seem to be stopping. I’m always extra cautious at zebra crossings because I nearly got run down at one when I was a child.”

“Thank you,” Josephine said. “I should have been more careful, but I was in a hurry to get somewhere. I’ll never forget your kindness.”

Christopher flushed. “It was nothing,” he replied.

Josephine leaned over and kissed his cheek. “It was a very significant something, and I’ll be forever in your debt,” she said. “But now I really must dash. I’m terribly late for something.”

She looked over at Janet. “Ready to try to cross the road again?” she asked.

Janet grimaced. “I don’t suppose we have much choice.”

They were able to cross without incident. It took Josephine less than five minutes to redo her makeup and hair. When they walked back outside, Janet was made aware of the difference immediately.

“Isn’t that Josephine Everest?” someone asked loudly before they’d gone more than a few steps.

“I saw her on telly this morning,” a voice replied. “She and Benjamin had a huge fight, and she ran away from their hotel.”

While everyone around them seemed to be gossiping about her, Josephine kept her head held high as they made their way to the museum. When they reached the entrance, they found a long queue of people waiting to get inside.

“Should we join the queue?” Janet asked.

Josephine laughed. “You are kidding, aren’t you?”

“I’ll text Edward.”

“I think that’s for the best. I’d rather not text Benjamin right now.”

Less than a minute later, Edward found them.

“Benjamin has been incredibly worried about you,” he told Josephine as he escorted them into the museum.

“I mustn’t tell him that I was nearly run down, then, I suppose,” Josephine replied with a laugh.

“You were nearly run down?” Edward asked.

“I’ll tell you the whole story later,” Janet told him.

Josephine looked at them both and then grinned. “You two make a cute couple. He’s been out of Hollywood so long that he may even be trustworthy. If I were you, I’d go for it,” she told Janet.

“Thanks for the advice,” Janet murmured as they approached the entrance to the Xosis Man exhibit.

Edward had tickets for all of them, and they quickly used them to get inside. Benjamin spotted Josephine almost immediately.

“Darling,” he called. He said something to the group of people around him and then ran across the room to pull Josephine into a tight hug. “We need to talk,” he said when he released her.

“Later,” she said. “Right now, you’re working and I should be helping you.
